Hyundai Ioniq 5 road trips

One of the two EVs behind GYST is a 2024 Ioniq 5. Here are three real plans GYST produced for it, and what they tell you about road-tripping this car in Canada.

What the plans looked like

Toronto to Montréal is the Ioniq 5’s easy day: 550 km with one 26-minute stop at Ivy’s ONroute Napanee on Highway 401, 236 km in. The car arrived at 28%, left at 89% and reached Montréal with about 20% left. About $20 at the charger, about $31 for the whole trip.

Toronto to Québec City is 813 km and 8 h 32 min of driving, planned in GYST’s AI trip planner. Three stops: Petro-Canada Cobourg (52% to 88%, 16 min), Ivy ONroute Morrisburg (20% to 76%, 21 min) and Petro-Canada Sainte-Hélène-de-Bagot (13 min). About 50 minutes of charging and about $57 for the trip, arriving around 20%. The plan built in a 30-minute traffic buffer.

Toronto to Halifax is 1,810 km, which GYST split into three driving days with overnight stops near Drummondville and Grand Falls: seven daytime charging stops, two nights, and about $131 including overnight and home charging, assuming the car starts each morning at 90%.

Charging the Ioniq 5 on the road

The Ioniq 5 uses a CCS connector in North America. The plans above charged at Ivy ONroute service centres and Petro-Canada sites along the 401 and the 20, all CCS.

Some Tesla Superchargers in Canada are open to other EVs. At those sites the Ioniq 5 needs a CCS-to-NACS adapter, and GYST flags a stop that needs one so it’s not a surprise at the stall.

Pick the exact Ioniq 5 version in GYST and connector compatibility follows the car, including a rental abroad with a European plug.

The Ioniq 5 in winter

Cold cuts range and slows fast charging in every EV, the Ioniq 5 included. GYST uses the forecast along your route to adjust the estimate, and you can raise the reserve setting so the plan keeps more battery in hand at each stop.

At each charger, enter the battery level the car actually shows and GYST rechecks the next leg. The winter guide has the full checklist. Read the winter guide

Questions about the Ioniq 5 on road trips

How far does an Ioniq 5 go between charging stops on the highway?

It depends on the version, the weather and your speed. In the Toronto to Montréal plan, a 2024 Ioniq 5 leaving at 80% drove 236 km to its first stop and arrived at 28%. Plan with the arrival battery you’re comfortable with, not the rated range.

Can an Ioniq 5 use Tesla Superchargers in Canada?

Only at sites Tesla has opened to other EVs, and only with a CCS-to-NACS adapter. GYST flags a planned stop that needs the adapter.

Does GYST know my exact Ioniq 5?

You pick the version when you set up the app, and GYST plans charging stops, charging time and arrival battery for that car. Past drives refine the range estimate over time.

Distances, times and costs are estimates from GYST plans, not measured drives. Always check your plan and charger status before you leave.
