An honest look at four popular ways to plan an EV road trip on iPhone — including when another app is the better choice.

Best for planning the whole trip in one place

PlugShare

Best for checking a charger before you rely on it

  • A free, community-driven charger map. Recent check-ins and comments flag broken, busy or hard-to-reach stations, and filters narrow results by plug type and power.
  • Its trip planner adds chargers along a route; PlugShare says the full experience works best on its website on a computer.

Apple Maps EV routing

Best if your car supports it

  • Built into Apple Maps for select vehicles connected with CarPlay. Maps can add charging stops and track your charge along the way.
  • Free, but availability depends on your car maker and region.
